New reason to talk your omega 3's
A New Reason To Take Your Omega 3s
(As If You Needed One!)
In scientific research, there are independent analyses and then there are “meta-analyses”. In a meta-analysis, data from several smaller studies is combined in order to provide a larger sample size (and therefore, stronger conclusion) than any single study can.
Youngevity led the way in petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to establish health claims regarding the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (i.e., fish oil). So when a recent meta-analysis concluded that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation might help lower the level of a major risk factor for heart disease, we thought it worth bringing to your attention.
In a report published in the journal Nutrition, combined data from 11 placebo-controlled trials totaling 720 participants indicated that supplementation with omega 3 supplements at doses ranging from 0.2 to 6 grams per day was associated with lower blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine.1 At elevated levels, homocysteine is considered a major risk factor for heart disease.
While this is great news, at best, the progress towards establishing a recommended daily intake of omega-3s can be described as “glacial.” The first paper linking omega-3 intake and the risk of heart disease was published more than forty years ago! In the meantime, most Americans still aren’t getting enough of this crucial nutrient.
